As we move from the end of Respect Life Month, our personal love and respect for the sanctity of human life continues on. In honor of All Saint’s Day, I thought it’d be so special to highlight some of our most beloved Saints in Heaven who play beautiful roles as intercessors for souls born and unborn.
St. Gianna Molla (patroness of the unborn child): She was a physician and surgeon in Italy. She felt a call to work with the poor and elderly, and later, felt called to also work with mothers and babies. She was married to Pietro Molla in 1955 and viewed her medical career as a gift from God. She was a mother of three, and upon her fourth pregnancy, she was diagnosed with a large ovarian cyst. She was recommended to have an abortion by her doctors, but she refused. A week after giving birth to her child, she passed away.
“Yes, my children need me, but I am essential to my unborn.”
St. Elizabeth (patroness of pregnant women): Relative of the Blessed Virgin Mary and mother of John the Baptist. The Gospel of Luke describes Elizabeth as “righteous in the eyes of God, observing all the commandments and ordinances of the Lord blamelessly.” (Luke 1:6). She was past child bearing age, then the angel Gabriel appeared to her husband Zachariah saying their prayers have been answered and Elizabeth will bear a son. She was the relative our Blessed Mother visited after the Annunciation of Our Lord.
“Most blessed are you among women, and blessed is the fruit of your womb. And how does this happen to me, that the mother of my Lord should come to me? For at the moment the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the infant in my womb leaped for joy.” (Luke 1:42-44)
These, and so many other holy men and women, have dedicated their lives and patronages to the beauty and dignity of life. We ask for their intercession, on this day especially, and the union of our prayers with theirs as we continue our efforts to honor life and for every soul to live their earthly life to its fullest.
